Rhinophyma Treatment

Rhinophyma treatment is a highly specialised procedure designed to restore the natural shape of the nose by removing excess tissue caused by rhinophyma. Rhinophyma is a progressive skin condition that results in thickening of the skin and enlargement of the sebaceous (oil) glands, leading to a bulbous, irregular appearance of the nose. It most commonly affects men over the age of 50 and is often associated with advanced rosacea, although not everyone with rosacea will develop rhinophyma.

As the condition progresses, the skin of the nose gradually becomes thicker, with enlarged pores, irregular contours and prominent oil glands. In more advanced cases, rhinophyma can affect breathing by narrowing the nostrils and may have a significant impact on self-confidence due to the noticeable change in facial appearance. Early assessment by an experienced dermatologist allows the condition to be managed before it becomes more severe.

The aim of rhinophyma treatment is to carefully remove the excess tissue while preserving the underlying healthy structures of the nose. Modern treatment techniques allow the nose to be reshaped with excellent precision, improving both function and appearance while minimising scarring. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic as a day-case treatment.

Professor Firas Al-Niaimi uses advanced laser technology and surgical techniques depending on the severity of the rhinophyma. One of the most effective treatments is the UltraPulse CO₂ Laser, which allows precise layer-by-layer removal of excess tissue while simultaneously sealing small blood vessels, reducing bleeding and promoting a smoother cosmetic result.

The choice of treatment depends on the extent of the rhinophyma and the individual characteristics of each patient. Mild cases may respond well to laser contouring alone, while more advanced rhinophyma may require a combination of surgical debulking and laser resurfacing to restore the natural contours of the nose. Following treatment, new healthy skin gradually forms over the treated area, resulting in a smoother, more natural appearance.

Recovery varies depending on the depth of treatment, but most patients experience temporary redness, swelling and crusting while the skin heals. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to optimise healing and reduce the risk of complications. Once recovery is complete, patients typically notice a significant improvement in both the appearance and texture of the nose, with long-lasting results.

Because rhinophyma is frequently associated with rosacea, ongoing management of the underlying skin condition may also be recommended. Treatments such as Vbeam® Prima or Pulsed Dye Laser can help reduce facial redness and visible blood vessels associated with rosacea, while medical treatment may help minimise future flare-ups. Every treatment plan is individually tailored following a comprehensive consultation.
