Picoway Laser Treatment
PicoWay Laser Treatment is one of the most advanced laser technologies available for treating unwanted pigmentation, tattoos, acne scars and skin rejuvenation. Manufactured by Candela, the PicoWay laser uses ultra-short picosecond laser pulses, delivering energy in trillionths of a second. Unlike older laser technologies that rely primarily on heat, PicoWay generates a powerful photoacoustic effect that breaks down pigment particles and tattoo ink with exceptional precision while minimising thermal damage to the surrounding skin.
The PicoWay system incorporates three different wavelengths, allowing Professor Firas Al-Niaimi to tailor treatment according to the specific condition being treated. The 532nm wavelength is particularly effective for superficial pigmentation and red, orange and purple tattoo inks. The 785nm wavelength is designed to target green and blue tattoo pigments, while the 1064nm wavelength penetrates more deeply into the skin, making it ideal for treating black tattoos and deeper pigmentary disorders.
Because of its versatility, PicoWay Laser Treatment is widely used for Laser Tattoo Removal, as well as conditions such as melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, age spots, sun damage and other pigmentary disorders. Patients looking to improve uneven skin tone can also learn more about Laser Treatment for Pigmentation, which explains the different approaches available depending on the diagnosis.
One of the key advantages of picosecond technology is its ability to shatter pigment into much smaller particles than traditional nanosecond lasers. These tiny fragments are then naturally removed by the body’s immune system over the following weeks, leading to gradual clearance of pigmentation and tattoo ink while reducing the risk of unwanted skin damage.
The PicoWay platform also features the advanced Resolve fractional handpiece, available in both 532nm and 1064nm wavelengths. Rather than targeting pigment alone, the Resolve handpiece creates microscopic areas of controlled skin injury through a process known as Light-Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB). This stimulates collagen production and activates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms, making it highly effective for treating Acne Scarring, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, stretch marks and general skin rejuvenation.
Patients seeking further collagen stimulation may also benefit from combining PicoWay Resolve treatment with Microneedling or Fractional Laser, depending on the condition being treated. Every treatment plan is individually tailored to achieve the safest procedure and the best possible long-term results.
PicoWay Laser Treatment is quick, comfortable and requires very little downtime. Thanks to treatment speeds of up to 10 pulses per second, most procedures take between five and thirty minutes depending on the size of the treatment area. Most patients can return to their normal daily activities shortly after treatment, making PicoWay an excellent option for those seeking effective laser treatment with minimal disruption.
Professor Firas Al-Niaimi is internationally recognised as one of the leading experts in picosecond laser technology. He has published numerous scientific papers on PicoWay and picosecond laser treatments, regularly lectures internationally and trains dermatologists in advanced laser techniques. His extensive experience ensures every patient receives an evidence-based, personalised treatment plan using one of the most sophisticated laser platforms available today.
