Mole Removal

Mole removal is a common dermatological procedure performed to remove benign moles for cosmetic reasons or to investigate moles that may show suspicious features. Moles, also known medically as naevi, develop when pigment-producing cells called melanocytes multiply within the skin. Most moles are completely harmless, but because some skin cancers can resemble moles, it is essential that every lesion is carefully assessed by an experienced dermatologist before removal.

Melanocytes are specialised cells responsible for producing melanin, the natural pigment that gives our skin, hair and eyes their colour. While increased melanin production causes tanning and other pigmentation changes, an increase in the number of melanocytes results in the formation of a mole. Moles vary considerably in size, colour, shape and appearance and can occur anywhere on the body.

Some moles are present from birth and are known as congenital naevi, while most develop gradually during childhood and early adulthood. Factors such as genetics, fair skin, sun exposure and certain medications can all influence the number of moles a person develops. Although the overwhelming majority of moles remain benign throughout life, a small proportion can develop atypical changes or become cancerous, making professional assessment extremely important.

During your consultation, Professor Firas Al-Niaimi carefully examines every mole using a specialised magnifying device called a dermoscope. This allows detailed evaluation of the mole’s structure and helps determine whether it is completely benign or requires further investigation. Patients wishing to have multiple lesions assessed may also benefit from a comprehensive Skin Health Assessment, particularly if they have a large number of moles or a history of significant sun exposure.

Several mole removal techniques are available, with the most appropriate method depending on the type of mole, its location and whether there is any suspicion of skin cancer. Surgical excision remains the gold standard treatment for suspicious or atypical moles because the entire lesion can be removed and sent for laboratory analysis. This procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and usually requires a small number of stitches, which are removed approximately one to two weeks later depending on the treatment area.

For carefully selected benign raised moles, a shave excision technique may be appropriate. This method removes the raised portion of the mole without requiring stitches and usually results in a quicker recovery. In selected cases involving completely benign, non-pigmented raised lesions, laser treatment may also be considered. However, laser mole removal should only be performed after careful assessment by an experienced consultant dermatologist to ensure the lesion is entirely suitable for this approach.

Professor Firas Al-Niaimi has extensive experience diagnosing and treating both benign and suspicious skin lesions. Where appropriate, patients requiring treatment for skin cancer may be referred for specialised procedures such as Mohs Surgery, while other benign lesions such as cysts and skin tags may be more appropriately treated with Cyst & Skin Tag Removal.

Whether your concern is cosmetic or medical, Professor Firas provides expert mole assessment and mole removal using the safest and most appropriate technique for each individual patient. Every procedure is carefully planned to achieve complete lesion removal where necessary while also aiming for the best possible cosmetic outcome and long-term skin health.
