TREATMENTS

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections, also known as intralesional steroid injections, are a highly effective treatment used in dermatology to reduce inflammation, flatten raised scars and treat a variety of inflammatory skin conditions. The treatment involves injecting a corticosteroid directly into the affected area, allowing a high concentration of medication to act precisely where it is needed while minimising effects on the rest of the body.

Intralesional steroid injections are commonly used to treat conditions such as keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, alopecia areata, cystic acne, discoid lupus, granuloma annulare and several other inflammatory skin disorders. By reducing inflammation and suppressing excessive collagen production, steroid injections can soften raised scars, relieve symptoms and improve both the appearance and function of the affected skin.

The procedure is performed using a very fine needle to minimise discomfort. After cleansing the skin with an antiseptic solution, the corticosteroid is carefully injected into the affected tissue at the appropriate depth. Treatment usually takes only a few minutes, and for patients with sensitive skin, a topical anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand to improve comfort.

Steroid injections are particularly effective for raised scars such as hypertrophic scars and keloids. Patients seeking comprehensive Scar Treatment may benefit from combining steroid injections with other procedures, depending on the type and severity of the scar.

The number of treatments required depends on the condition being treated. Some patients achieve excellent results after a single injection, while others require a series of treatments performed approximately every six to eight weeks. In selected cases, intralesional steroid injections may be combined with laser therapy, surgery or other medical treatments to maximise long-term results. For example, patients with acne-related scarring may also benefit from Acne Scarring Treatment, while those with persistent inflammatory acne may require Acne Treatment alongside steroid therapy.

Although intralesional steroid injections are considered very safe when performed by an experienced dermatologist, every treatment is preceded by a detailed consultation to discuss the expected benefits and any potential side effects. These may include temporary thinning of the skin, changes in skin pigmentation or, very rarely, infection. Professor Firas carefully selects the most appropriate steroid concentration and injection technique to maximise treatment success while minimising the risk of complications.

Professor Firas Al-Niaimi has extensive experience performing intralesional steroid injections for a wide variety of dermatological conditions. Having treated hundreds of patients and published scientific research on the use of corticosteroid injections in dermatology, he combines evidence-based practice with personalised treatment planning to achieve the best possible clinical and cosmetic outcomes.

Whether you require treatment for raised scars, inflammatory skin disease or another condition suitable for intralesional steroid therapy, Professor Firas provides expert assessment and tailored treatment using the latest dermatological techniques.
