Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is one of the most effective treatments available for improving skin texture, reducing wrinkles, treating sun damage and minimising scars. By precisely removing the outer damaged layers of the skin while stimulating new collagen production, laser resurfacing creates smoother, healthier and younger-looking skin. It is widely regarded as one of the gold-standard treatments for facial rejuvenation and advanced skin renewal.

The skin consists of two main layers: the epidermis (the outer layer) and the dermis (the deeper structural layer). The epidermis contains keratinocytes, which continually renew the skin, together with melanocytes that produce skin pigment. Over time, factors such as excessive sun exposure, ageing, smoking, environmental pollution and inadequate skincare can slow this natural renewal process, leaving the skin looking dull, uneven and weathered. Fine lines, pigmentation and rough skin texture gradually become more noticeable as these changes accumulate.

Laser resurfacing works by carefully removing damaged surface layers of the skin, allowing healthier new skin cells to replace them during the healing process. At the same time, heat generated by the laser stimulates collagen remodelling within the deeper layers of the skin, improving elasticity and reducing visible signs of ageing. Patients often notice improvements in skin tone, texture, pore size and overall skin quality as collagen continues to regenerate over the following months.

The deeper dermis provides the skin with its strength and elasticity through collagen, elastin and naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. As these important structural components decline with age, the skin gradually loses firmness and develops wrinkles and laxity. Patients looking to further improve skin firmness alongside laser resurfacing may also benefit from Laser Skin Tightening or Profhilo Treatment, depending on their individual concerns.

Laser resurfacing is performed using an ablative laser, which precisely removes microscopic layers of damaged skin while generating controlled heat to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. The most widely recognised laser for this purpose is the UltraPulse CO2 Laser, one of the most advanced technologies available for treating wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars and other forms of skin ageing. Depending on the depth of treatment, recovery can range from several days to approximately two weeks.

Laser resurfacing is highly effective for improving fine lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, enlarged pores and a wide variety of scars, including acne scarring. Patients with more complex acne scars may benefit from combining laser resurfacing with Subcision, Microneedling or Fillers for Acne Scars, allowing each scar type to be treated using the most appropriate technique for optimal long-term improvement.

Before treatment, Professor Firas Al-Niaimi carries out a comprehensive consultation to assess your skin type, medical history, lifestyle and treatment goals. This allows the laser settings and treatment depth to be fully customised, ensuring maximum clinical benefit while maintaining the highest standards of safety and patient care.

Professor Firas Al-Niaimi is one of only a small number of consultant dermatologists in the UK with formal advanced training in laser resurfacing and extensive experience performing these procedures. As an internationally recognised laser expert, researcher and educator, he has published numerous scientific papers on laser dermatology and continues to train dermatologists around the world in advanced laser techniques. His expertise allows patients to benefit from some of the most advanced laser resurfacing treatments available for healthier, smoother and naturally rejuvenated skin.
